Under Dial 1298 for Ambulance project, a new ambulance control room software was launched in Mumbai recently by Ambulance Access for All Foundation.
Residents of Mumbai can avail of this rapid ambulance response by dialing 1298. This technology is certified by National Academy of Emergency Medical Dispatch (NAEMD). The 1298 ambulance control room has been equipped with computer aided dispatch software which works on real-time tracking system of ambulances using global positioning systems. Communication link between control room, ambulances and hospital emergency rooms are provided using wireless radio trunking backed up with CDMA and GSM phones to ensure smooth functioning of the life support ambulance service.
The backbone of Dial 1298 for ambulance project is the trained control room staff to register help calls and manage movement of the ambulances across Mumbai. It has call takers 24x7
and they are proficient in English, Marathi, Hindi, Gujarati, Tamil and Malayalam. Once having received the call for the ambulance at 1298 control room, the area to be reached immediately located on the GPS enabled map.
This project provides a network of fully equipped, advanced and basic life support ambulances. The service has been set up with technical and managerial assistance from London Ambulance Service and New York Presbyterian EMS, world’s two largest and best metropolitan ambulance services.
The uniqueness of this service is its multi-level differential pricing strategy that works on the principle of cross subsidy where the high income population pays higher, the economically underprivileged pays lower and the BPL population gets the service free of charge in life threatening medical emergencies. This service is free for victims of road accidents and mass casualty incidents in Mumbai and Kerala.
The distinctiveness of the 1298 service is its self sustainability from its own revenues while providing universal access irrespective of the capability to pay using cross subsidised pricing regime which serves the poor.
This service is being run and professionally managed by M/s. Ziqitza Health Care Limited which has been set up for the sole purpose of managing and running ambulance services across India and developing world in the future.
