MM catches up with GSK Velu, MD, Trivitron to find out his recommendations for the budget 2009

MM: Do you think import duty on Import of parts for servicing medical equipments should be reduced?
GSK: Yes import duty on Import of parts for servicing medical equipments needs to be rationalised. The present structure of producing Enduse Certificate is quite cumbersome.

MM: Do you think the government should encourage indigenous manufacture of medical equipment by allowing import of raw materials, components and spares for manufacturing of medical equipments at 0% import duty.
GSK: Absolutely necessary

MM: Should the government rationalise import duties across all medical equipments.

GSK: Import duties across all medical equipment needs to be category based. Alternatively all Finished Medical Devices/Instruments and Kits should be at 15%  to 20% customs duty and all Raw Materials/ Components should be Zero Percent for incentivising local manufacturing.

MM: Should the government reduce service tax on service contract of medical equipment?
GSK: Yes Service Tax should be exempted like Clinical Services and Clinical Trials.
