For next 10 years, in an effort at providing ‘Healthcare for All’, government must remove all taxes and duties for Healthcare providers and manufacturers of Healthcare products.
For
next
10
years,
in
an
effort
at
providing
‘Healthcare
for
All’,
government
must
remove
all
taxes
and
duties
for
Healthcare
providers
and
manufacturers
of
Healthcare
products.
The
biggest
challenge
faced
by
the
healthcare
delivery
system
is
the
high
cost.
One
of
the
major
reasons
for
this
is
that
majority
of
the
medical
equipments
are
imported
into
India.
They
are
subject
to
variables
like
currency
exchange
and
additional
costs
in
the
form
of
high
customs
duties.
These
duties
are
higher
still
for
import
of
spare
parts
of
these
equipments.
The
medical
devices
industry
would
definitely
welcome
a
proactive
step
by
the
government
of
India
in
the
upcoming
budget
by
providing
for
a
reduction
in
customs
tariffs
of
spare
parts
for
medical
equipments.
The
government
should
also
side
by
side
encourage
indigenous
manufacturing
through
elimination
of
import
duties
on
raw
materials
and
components
of
medical
equipments. There
is
an
opportunity
for
the
government
to
correct
its
50
year
old
mistake
of
neglecting
the
peoples
need
for
an
affordable
and
efficient
healthcare
system.Every
citizen’s
right
to
the
enjoyment
of
the
highest
attainable
standard
of
physical
and
mental
health
is
recognised
in
article
12
of
the
‘International
Covenant
on
Economic,
Social
and
Cultural
rights’ It
is
the
governments
duty
to
provide
adequate
healthcare
to
every
citizen
either
free
or
at
affordable
charges.
However,
at
one
end,
even
after
60
years
of
independence,
the
governments
healthcare
system
does
not
meet
the
needs
of
even
20%
of
the
population.
On
the
other
end,
government
is
burdening
the
private
sector
health
providers
by
a
slew
of
taxes
and
levies.”
