Medybiz, India’s first home-based disease management service initiated by Reliance
The disease management services to be rolled out by Medybiz will ensure a shift from
in-patient care model to a chronic disease managed model, reports Raelene Bhundoo
The
healthcare
service
industry
is
set
to
witness
a
tremendous
transformation
with
the
introduction
of
Medybiz,
India’s
first
home-based
disease
management
service
initiated
by
Reliance
Health
Venture
Ltd.
Medybiz
will
offer
integrated
health
management
services
with
a
new
approach
to
improve
outcomes
for
the
chronically
ill
and
high
risk
patients.
The
programme
is
based
on
the
module
of
a
unique
partnership
between
the
physician
and
the
patient
and
serviced
by
an
expert
panel
of
medical
and
para-medical
professionals.
The
various
modules
offered
by
Medybiz
aims
at
slowing
down
the
pace
of
disease
progression
and
enabling
faster
recovery
through
quality
care.
This
disease
management
service
is
an
addition
to
Reliance’s
ambitious
plans
for
its
health
care
business.
It
already
runs
medical
insurance
and
hospital
business.
It
is
also
the
first
corporate
company
from
India,
to
become
the
member
of
Disease
Management
Association
of
America
(DMAA).
Chronic
diseases
are
a
growing
concern
for
the
Indian
economy.
The
WHO
projects
that
by
year
2015,
India
will
record
an
estimated
loss
of
national
income
to
the
tune
of
$54
billion
on
account
of
chronic
diseases.
This
will
rank
India
as
the
second
fastest
growing
health
risk
economies
of
the
world
after
China.
India’s
current
healthcare
expenditure
is
merely
five
per
cent
of
its
GDP.
With
all
these
hurdles
in
place,
India
needs
innovative
solutions
to
address
its
healthcare
issues.
Moreover,
the
failure
of
public
health
delivery
system
to
match
up
with
the
swelling
population
and
socio
economic
changes
has
driven
the
increasing
participation
of
private
sector
players
in
the
healthcare
services
segment.
Over
the
last
two
decades,
the
private
sector
contribution
in
healthcare
sector
has
amplified
from
74
per
cent
in
1986
to
81
per
cent
in
2008.
However,
the
increasing
incidences
of
chronic
diseases
and
the
escalating
cost
of
healthcare
have
opened
new
avenues
for
investments
in
healthcare
services
with
a
focused
approach
to
chronic
disease
management.
“This
is
a
relatively
new
concept
for
India,
where
medical
insurance
plays
a
vital
role
in
healthcare,”
said
the
official
spokesperson
of
Medybiz.
“We
believe
that
disease
responds
to
medicines
and
people
respond
to
care.
Keeping
this
in
mind
and
in
line
with
our
vision
of
‘Managing
Health
Lifetime’,
our
team
of
medical
specialists
will
administer
unique
home-based
disease
management
services
to
address
various
chronic
ailments.
The
entire
programme
is
designed
by
defining
specific
health
needs,
co-developing
realistic
strategies
for
solving
issue
related
to
healthcare
service
management
and
execution
of
the
programme
through
workable
health
solutions
that
are
deployable
and
based
on
real
care
requirements,”
he
adds.
Further
he
goes
on
to
say
that
these
unique
home-based
programmes
are
designed
to
help
people
change
unhealthy
lifestyles
that
lead
to
chronic
diseases,
improve
self-care
skills
during
an
illness
and
make
cost-effective
healthcare
decisions.
Additionally,
since
such
integrated
health
services
depend
upon
trained
medical
and
para-medical
resources
for
delivery
employment
opportunities
will
continue
to
grow
for
both
medical
and
para-medical
talent.
Presently,
Medybiz
is
finalising
its
home-based
disease
management
programmes
to
address
chronic
ailments
such
as
cancer
and
diabetes,
orthopaedic
disorders
such
as
rheumatoid
arthritis
and
osteoarthritis,
neurological
disorders
including
Alzheimer’s
disease
and
Parkinson’s
disease,
and
respiratory
disorders
such
as
asthma.
