Holding a saga of five decades, GKNMH is an example of serving patients with a combination of hi-end technology and humanity, explores Deepali Vichare
It
is
always
said,
‘Dream
on,
for
some
day
it
comes
true’.
Late
G
Kuppuswamy
Naidu,
founder
of
Laxmi
Group
of
Companies,
Coimbatore,
did
see
a
dream
that
had
a
hidden
noble
cause
—
setting
up
a
hospital
for
mother
and
child
care.
His
dream
stands
tall
today
as
G
Kuppuswamy
Naidu
Memorial
Hospital
(GKNMH),
moulded
into
a
tertiary,
super
specialty
600-bed
one,
serving
the
community
with
science
and
humanity.
Around
1920s,
Coimbatore
was
a
small
town
with
meagre
medical
facilities,
with
just
one
District
Head
Quarters
Hospital.
It
was
then,
when
Naidu’s
stepsister
passed
away
during
labour
and
so
did
her
child,
a
week
later.
Greatly
moved
by
this
tragic
incident,
Naidu
vowed
to
provide
help
to
women
in
labour.
He
didn’t
live
to
see
his
dream
come
true,
but
raised
enough
money
to
set-up
the
institute.
Thus,
on
October
29,
1948,
the
G
Kuppuswamy
Naidu
Charity
Trust
for
Educational
and
Medical
Relief
was
registered
and
in
May
1952,
a
50-bed
GKNMH
came
into
existence,
as
a
hospital
for
women
and
children.
Constructed
on
a
huge
landscape
of
approximately
14
acres,
GKNMH
gradually
grew
from
strength
to
strength
into
a
multi-disciplinary
referral
institution
for
quality
medical
care
in
this
region.
Subsequently,
the
institute
is
known
for
its
services
in
oncology,
cardiology,
gynaecology,
kidney
transplants,
orthopaedics
and
many
others.
Being
a
super
specialty
institute,
the
peripheral
services
incorporated
by
the
hospital
are
one-of-its-kinds.
The
hospital
strongly
believes
in
the
magic
of
IT
and
is
thus
the
first
to
implement

System

system
in
India,
which
is
the
largest
of
its
kind
in
Asia.
The
hospital
was
also
the
one
to
conduct
Asia’s

Radial
Live
Course
in
the
year
2002.
The
designated
regional
blood
bank
is
a
part
of
the
automated
laboratory.
Furthermore,
the
dedicated
support
services
–
laundry,
CSSD,
housekeeping,
catering,
etc.
have
enhanced
the
superior
care
of
the
hospital.
GKNMH
has
been
a
tertiary
referral
centre
for
more
than
five
decades,
thus
known
for
some
unique
surgeries
like
aortic
aneurysm
looping
and
total
arterial
revascularisation
for
coronary
bypass;
for
its
special
clinics
like
diabetics
clinic,
pain
clinic,
paediatric
low

ward
and
for
serving
with
humanity.
The
services
The
cardiology
department
is
the
foremost
centre
of
this
region
with
superior
facilities
from
transoesophageal
echocardiography
to
nuclear
medicine
study.
The
department
is
excellent
in
transradial
interventions,
stent
implantation
for
multi
vessel
disease
and
pacemaker
including
AICD.
The
unit
is
renowned
for
introducing
the
radial
artery
route
for
angiography
and
angioplasty.
Coronary
care
ambulance
with
resuscitation
facilities
has
been
one
of
the
strong
supports.
The
cardiothoracic
department
has
been
an
equivalent
support
and
has
been
consistently
performing
extraordinary
surgeries.
Few
of
the
unique
surgeries
performed
by
this
department
are…
Implantation
of
a
combo
device
for
cardiac
failure
and
arrthymiasys
pacing
Aortic
aneurysm
looping
into
the
pulmonology
Total
arterial
revascularisation
for
coronary
bypass
Device

The
department
of
nuclear
medicine
with
the
latest
dual
head
gamma
camera
is
a
feather
in
the
cap
for
GKNMH
and
definitely
a
one-of-its-kind
in
the
region.
The
technology
has
been
used
by
the
hospital
to
help
diagnose
diseases
of
the
thyroid,
bone,
lung,
liver,
kidney,
gall
bladder
and
heart.
The
hospital
is
approved
by
the
Government
of
Tamil
Nadu
for
performing
kidney
transplantations
and
subsequently
peritoneal
and
haemodialysis
for
renal
failure,
poisoning,
etc.
are
regularly
performed
here.
As
the
hospital
commenced
for
women
and
children,
the
facilities
incorporated
with
the
department
of
paediatrics
and
obstetrics
&
gynaecology
are
hi-end.
From
laparoscopy
to
fertility
clinic,
